Data Science for Everyone − Data Analytics with R
Speaker: Dr Arinze Akutekwe, Senior Data Scientist at Fujitsu in Manchester
Venue: ELA 003 (TLT)
Organiser Lead: Dr Huseyin Seker (IoC Northumbria Director)
Data science is an interdisciplinary field aiming at extracting knowledge and insights from data by means of advanced statistics, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and their related methods. Due to the technological advances, data is becoming more available and goes beyond volume, variety, and velocity alone. In addition, industry is now becoming more data-driven and automated. Therefore, data science is now more important to deal with industry’s complex data-driven business, and data scientists are in high demand.
This talk will introduce data science with several industry-scale examples using R package. R is an integrated suite of software facilities for data manipulation, calculation and graphical display. It includes an effective data handling and storage facility, a suite of operators for calculations on arrays, in particular matrices, a large, coherent, integrated collection of intermediate tools for data analysis, graphical facilities for data analysis and display either on-screen or on hardcopy, and a well-developed, simple and effective programming language which includes conditionals, loops, user-defined recursive functions and input and output facilities. You will also hear about how you can self-learn coding in R along with useful resources.
Dr Arinze Akutekwe is a data scientist with several years of experience in both academia and industry in (big) data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data analytics platforms. He has been actively involved with the design, development and deployment of advanced data analytics methods at industry scales. Within Fujitsu, he works on industry-focused projects involving the discovery of information hidden in vast amounts of data to make smarter decisions to deliver even better solutions to tackle the needs of clients.
