Data science is an interdisciplinary field aiming at extracting knowledge and insights from data by means of advanced statistics, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning and their related methods. Due to the technological advances, data is becoming more available and goes beyond volume, variety, and velocity alone. In addition, every sector is now becoming more data-driven and automated. Therefore, data science is now more important to deal with complex data-driven business, and data scientists are in high demand.

This session will be hosted by SAGE Ocean, an initiative from SAGE Publishing that supports social scientists to work with big data and new technology. SAGE Ocean offers a wide range of resources, courses and events as part of their mission to help equip social scientists with the computational skills and tools they need to supercharge their research impact.

This 90 minute session will be split into 3 parts:

1. Big data: What are the opportunities and challenges for social science research?
2. Why use R? Video demo with Dr Maja Založnik
3. Try out SAGE Campus' 'Intro to R' course

If you want to try out the SAGE Campus ’Introduction to R’ course during the session, please bring a laptop so you can connect via WiFi. Login details will be provided during the session. Please also ensure your device has the correct version of ’R studio’: check download

You can still try the course out during the session if you don’t have ’R Studio’ on your machine, but you will not be able to try the exercises out in full.

All attendees will receive a discount code for purchasing a SAGE Campus course. Find out more at campus.sagepub.com.
